Some Red Flags On Alfredo Aceves

Since Buster Olney first reported that the Mets had interest in reliever/starter Alfredo Aceves last week, there have been a couple of updates on him.

MLB Trade Rumors reported that the righthander re-hired agent Tom O’Connell to represent him recently, and that Aceves called O’Connell and apologized for firing him in the first place.

Marc Carig of Newsday also added that the Mets’ interest in Aceves appears to be for only a minor-league deal, according to a source.

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe pointed out some red flags on Aceves back in July, and referred to him as a mess and an oddball who will never pitch for the Red Sox again.

The Red Sox picked him up and Aceves pitched very well in 2011. It has been a mess since. Aceves bickered with Bobby Valentine last season, to the point of suspension. He also challenged John Farrell’s authority in spring training, earning a lecture. Catchers complained about how he shook off their calls and other teammates look askance at his odd behavior.

Odd as in quirky. Aceves once made a bed out of towels in spring training and tried to sleep on the floor in front of his locker. Stuff like that. The Sox shipped him to the minors then brought him back for a series of spot starts that went well. But Aceves still operated outside the margins. He showed up when he felt like it, even before starts, and was difficult to communicate with.

I strongly doubt that Aceves is being looked at as anything more than a back of the bullpen option and not the late inning reliever they are looking for to replace the departed LaTroy Hawkins.

Buster Olney of ESPN says there’s a “good possibility” free agent reliever Alfredo Aceves signs with the Mets.

The former Yankees prospect posted a 4.86 ERA with a 1.730 WHIP in 37.0 innings pitched.

He struck out 24 and walked 22 while splitting time between the bullpen and rotation.

That strikeout to walk ratio is pretty scary…

Over the last two seasons, the 31-year old Aceves has compiled a 5.19 ERA over 80 appearances for the Red Sox.

My question is, does it still constitute as a bullpen upgrade when the pitcher you’re bringing in has a higher WHIP than Robert Carson (1.421)?

On the plus side, he’ll be dirt cheap so he won’t eat into our 2014 spending pool.
